For senior product designers looking for a 2-3 year repositioning, AI design is the most defensible bet in 2026. For career-switchers, the answer is almost always to start as a product designer first.
Moving between specialisms
The cost of switching is real but manageable. Three patterns from designers who have done it.
- Build the portfolio piece first. Before applying for roles in the new specialism, build one strong project that signals the new specialism. Otherwise hiring managers can't picture you in the new role.
